The cutting disc

When you are cutting porcelain and ceramic tiles, you need to use a cutting disc that is specially designed for cutting these materials. The mesh patterned cutting edge makes sure that the tiles are cut cleaner, and the porcelain or ceramics are less likely to chip, crack or break. The debris flows away smoothly, keeping the cutting disc cool and and the cutting edge clear and easily visible. The well placed cooling holes make sure that the disc doesn’t warp or twist. Keeping the cutting disc straight means it lasts longer and the cutting is far better. The reinforced core helps to keep the cutting disc performing for a very long time, giving you value for money as well as excellent performance.

The materials

The tiles are made from very dense, natural clay. When firing the clay to create the porcelain tiles, it removes most of the water. This is turn, means that the clay sets in tiny, but very hard plate-like formations which stick together. These minute platelets mean that the porcelain is very brittle. Consequently, the tiles crack and chip easily. It is also why they are very difficult to cut smoothly and achieve the clean, straight edges on the tiles.

During manufacturing there is no way to make sure that all of the platelets formed during firing lay the same way. So, some batches of the tiles have the vertical platelets and some have horizontal platelets.

Conclusion

Unfortunately it is simply the luck of the draw which direction the platelets in your batch of tiles are laying. If your batch of tiles have mainly horizontal platelets, they are more prone to chipping when you cut the tiles vertically, than if the platelets lay vertically. This is where the design and construction of the cutting discs that you are using is very important.
